Our Inspiration

Dr. J. S. Rao

The inspiration behind the inception of Indian Institute for Autonomous Systems (IIAS) is Dr. Jammi Srinivasa Rao (1939-2020), a mechanical and aerospace engineer and Indian physicist. He is globally renowned for his 60 years of active contribution to the rotating machinery research and vibration technologies. He was one of the 13 founding members of the International Federation of Theory of Machines and Mechanisms (IFToMM, Zakopane, Poland, 1969), a member of several other scientific societies, and he made significant contributions to their growth. He founded and operated 'The Vibration Institute of India (TVII, 1999)', established the 'International Journal of Vibration Engineering and Technology (JVET)' journal, and the 'Vibration Engineering and Technology of Machinery (VETOMAC)' international conference series.

He taught at IIT Delhi and served as visiting faculty for 10+ world-leading universities. He was a consultant to 30+ leading industries and government agencies in India and abroad, mainly in the mechanical, automotive, aeronautical, and space sectors. As a Counselor-Science and Technology at the Indian Embassy of the USA, Rao acted as a bridge between both governments to set up a large number of export-oriented US industries in India that contributed to the electronification, biotechnology, computers, materials, aerospace, and aeronautics of India. Some of his novel contributions are investigating the techinical issues of Washington metro as principal investigator and an atomic power plant accident in Narora, India, as its chief investigator. His latest consultancy contribution to ISRO was on rotor dynamic design analysis of Cryogenic pumps for the GSLV fourth stage of the Chandrayaan-2 mission.

Dr. Rao mentored and assisted IIAS's founder, Dr. Prashanth Dalawai, in various stages as his academic grand supervisor. Some of their associations resulted in constituting the aerospace board of studies, developing simulation-based aerospace curriculum, and formulating and announcing the conference as the chairs. Rao's long-term and constant encouragement has motivated the IIAS's founder to initiate IIAS and extend the heritage. IIAS is committed to driving the vision and path that Rao left - to create technology, workforce, and sophisticated machines and systems for the modern world.
